Maria arrives while the street is still quiet. By the time the first bus passes, flour is in the air and the ovens have warmed the back room.
“The first loaf I sold was the hardest one to put on the shelf. I had spent so long trying to make everything exact that letting somebody buy it felt strangely personal.”
She says the regulars changed that. One came in every Saturday for the same rye loaf. Another stopped on the walk home and always asked what had gone wrong that week, because Maria once told him there was no such thing as a perfect batch.
“That is what I wanted, really. Not just somewhere that sold bread. Somewhere small enough for people to notice each other.”
